Mixed scrap is harder to evaluate and process. Segregation is the simplest lever a plant controls.
Downstream processors pay for material they can use. The more predictable and uniform a lot is, the easier it is to direct to the right furnace or smelter.
Contamination reduces usability
Oil, plastic, rubber, mixed alloys and dirt all add processing effort. Sometimes contaminated material must be downgraded to a lower category.
Practical segregation steps
- Keep aluminium and copper separate from steel
- Separate borings from solid scrap
- Drain coolant from chips where practical
- Remove non-metal attachments where safe
Start small
You don't need a perfect system. Separating your two or three largest streams usually delivers most of the benefit.
